5 free GitHub alternatives to paid software

2 min readVladyslav Kondratiev

Subscriptions pile up quietly: voice-over, notes, scheduling, SEO, screen recording. Each one is cheap, together they add up. For each of these jobs there is an open-source alternative on GitHub you can run yourself.

Here are five of them and the easiest way to install them.

1. VoiceStudio instead of ElevenLabs

Voice-over and voice cloning that run right on your computer. Your text and voice stay with you, and you don’t pay per character.

Keep in mind local voice generation is heavy. On a weak laptop it will be slower than the cloud.

2. AppFlowy instead of Notion

Notes, tasks and a knowledge base. The main difference from Notion: your data lives with you, not on someone else’s server.

3. Cal.diy instead of Calendly

Meeting booking with a single link. You send the link, the other person picks a free slot, and the meeting lands in your calendar.

4. OpenSEO instead of Semrush

Rankings, backlinks and site audits. No subscription: you pay for search data as you go through an API. For a small site that is much cheaper than a monthly plan.

5. Cap instead of Loom

Screen recording you share with a link. Record, send, and the other person watches in the browser.

How to install any of them

You don’t have to figure it out by hand. Drop the repository link into Claude Code and write:

Clone it and run it locally following the README

Claude reads the README, installs dependencies and starts it. If something fails, it sees the error and tries to fix it. You only answer questions if keys or settings are needed.

Before you switch

  • Updates are on you. A cloud service updates itself; your copy needs pulling now and then.
  • Your computer or your server. Some of these run as an app on your machine, others need to stay online so other people can use them. Meeting booking, for example, has to be reachable at any time.
  • Your data stays with you. Great for privacy, but backups are on you too.

If you need a team service with zero hassle, a paid subscription may be the better call. If it’s for you and you want control, these five do the job for free.
